Surgery for Arthritis

Knee Arthritis Surgery

Arthritis causes knee pain and stiffness, and there are several options of knee arthritis surgery from realignment surgery to partial and complete knee replacement. These are described below.

Knee realignment

Many people have minor degrees of knee malalignment, commonly called having knock-knees or being bow-legged. When the deformity is more pronounced, it can cause overloading of the outer or inner side of the knee. This often causes pain on the affected side of the knee. If treated early, it can prevent or delay the onset of arthritis, and prevent the need for a knee replacement.

Using special imaging and a sophisticated computer program, I can work out exactly where the deformity lies, and by how much to adjust the bone to correct the malalignment (corrective osteotomy). This provides a very personalised solution to an individual knee problem.

Partial /  Total knee replacement

Arthritis may require knee replacement surgery, but many patients only have damage to one side of the knee joint. I am specifically trained to offer partial knee replacements to suitable patients. This allows a much quicker recovery than a total knee replacement, with lower risks of complications like infection or blood clots.

If however, the patient truly has arthritis in the whole knee, I am proud to be able to offer patients both the routine 'off the shelf' implants, and customised 3D printed total knee replacements.

Customised total knee replacement

With traditional (off the shelf) knee replacement implants, there is always a compromise in size or shape. This is because the implants are of average sizes and do not match the patient's original knee. I am proud to offer patients customised (Conformis) knee replacements, which are 3D printed to match the patient exactly. In fact, such a customised knee will not fit any other patients. The difference is like between a 'made-to-measure' suit and an 'off the rack' one.

This is truly the next level in personalised knee surgery. It will hopefully improve the recovery and final result and function of the knee replacement.
