Patellar instability

Patellar instability or maltracking

If your kneecap (or patella) is not tracking normally, it can cause pain or giving way of your knee. The underlying problem may be to do with muscle, ligaments or the shape of the bone itself. I am pleased to offer an 'a la carte' service, rather than a 'one size fits all' approach to this problem.

Physiotherapy

Most kneecap problems can be treated with physiotherapy. Careful examination and focused imaging will confirm if surgery can be avoided. A dedicated team of physiotherapists will provide an individualised rehabilitation programme to get you back to full activity.

Ligament reconstruction

Recurrent patellar instability can be very disruptive and debilitating. Many of these cases do need a patellar stabilisation procedure involving ligament (MPFL) reconstruction. This stops the kneecap dislocating, and allows physiotherapy to rehabilitate you back to full activity.

Bony surgery

pattelar-instability
More severe cases may need bony realignment (tuberosity transfer) or reshaping (trochleoplasty).  More detailed imaging can reveal the underlying bony problem and will determine the exact procedure required.
